Shout-out for H&S Reps

UMUCU is desperate for more Health and Safety (H&S) reps; we want one per area. The best way to ensure that workers are protected is to have union H&S reps in every area of the University. Workplaces that have union safety reps and joint safety committees have half the serious injury rate of those without.

At present we have 11 H&S reps, but there are over 40 HSW committees at the University, so it isn’t possible to represent all areas. The more H&S reps we have, the greater our voice and influence, which ensures high standards for all.

Can you assist in becoming a H&S rep yourself? Or please could you ask your members if they would represent their area? If we had enough reps, the commitment would be small, going to one HSW Committee, which meet typically 4 times a year ~ 1.5 hours. It may be that they would prefer not to represent their own area and assist in another, which can easily be arranged.

We have monthly H&S drop-in sessions to meet the team and get support. I also regularly email on issues/concerns to the reps and we come up with common issues to raise at committees, which ensures a stronger message. We also run campaigns and events to raise awareness and make the University listen and act on all of the above.

Full support will be given and shadowing an active H&S rep assists with this process.

Significant wins have included face coverings being mandatory in all teaching environment in September 2021, University setting up a wellbeing working group, and University agreeing to set up a University wide stress reporting system (still in progress).

Have your say; become a H&S rep today! Together we can make a difference.
