Retired Members

We hope that UCU members who retire will retain their union membership, and continue to play an active role in the union, whether as members of UMUCU or not. On retired membership of the union, see .

There are two options for retired members. The first is to transfer to the regional retired members’ branch . The retired members’ branch in the north-west mainly meets in Liverpool. Members who retire are transferred to the appropriate regional branch, unless they specifically wish to take up the second option, that of remaining in their workplace branch. You can update your membership status at the My UCU page (you will have to register to use this if you have not already done so) or by contacting the UMUCU office.

The national subscription rate for 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019 for retired members is £2.80 per month (£2.78 excluding the political fund). If you choose to remain in UMUCU rather than transfer to the regional branch, an additional local subscription of £1.15 applies.

In UMUCU we hope to enable retired members to play a larger role in the branch, perhaps by assisting at recruitment events or by supporting industrial action in some way. This would also involve discussion with the university on the status of retired members of staff (there appears to be no university policy on this at present). Issues to be discussed here could include: arrangements for being paid for any continuing teaching or supervisory work, and access to university facilities such as office space and assistance from support staff.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday 28th March, 3-4pm in 4.210 University Place and members are also invited to attend the branch social in Sandbar, Grosvenor Street following the meeting.   For further details please click HERE
