The bell has tolled. Climate change is happening at a frightening speed. Politicians’ miracle solutions such as carbon capture or the so-called green industrial revolution remain esoteric chimeras and mostly tend to lull people into thinking that something is done to address the climate emergency while in reality it is the cover to continue business as usual and a soporific to let us sleep-walk into the abyss.
Wake up! Our mission is not despair but critical reflection and determined action. In furtherance of UCU’s vision for less marketized and more sustainable, humane and fair higher education system in particular UCU’s climate emergency agenda, our branch together with students is in the process of developing a robust climate action plan for our university.
The UMUCU green network is also participating in university wide consultations on green issues, e.g. changes to travel policy and advises the SU and other stakeholders on green issues using the wide expertise of UCU members in matters of sustainability and climate change. To that purpose UMUCU has a network of green workplace representatives from all sectors of the university. If you would like to join the network, drop us a line at ucu@manchester.ac.uk
